Before joining PSI, my experience was primarily shaped by university coursework. Having just completed my first year of Computer Science at the University of Illinois, most of my learning revolved around assignments, programming concepts, and classroom projects. While that gave me a strong technical foundation, I had very little understanding of how software is actually built, shipped, and used in the real world.
When I decided to spend my summer in India, I knew I wanted to do something meaningful instead of simply taking a break. I was looking for an internship where I could challenge myself, and PSI stood out because it offered something unique, the opportunity to work across different functions rather than being limited to a single role. Looking back, that became the most rewarding part of my experience.
Although I joined as a Product Management Intern, my journey quickly extended far beyond product management. I worked on product testing and feature validation for the Own360 stack, explored frontend development, contributed to building the landing page for the PanScience website, learned about domain management and IT operations, participated in client demonstrations, and gained first-hand exposure to how product, business, HR, and engineering teams work together. Every new responsibility gave me a broader understanding of how a startup functions.
Like many first-time interns, I was nervous when I joined. Having completed only my first year while many of the other interns were more experienced, I wasn't sure whether I would be able to meet expectations. Those doubts faded quickly because of the people around me. Whenever I had questions or made mistakes, the team was always willing to guide me. Instead of expecting me to know everything, they encouraged me to ask questions, experiments, and keep learning.
One of the biggest changes during my internship was my perspective on software development itself. At university, projects usually begin with a clearly defined problem. At PSI, I learned that innovation often starts much earlier, identifying problems that are worth solving. Seeing how different teams collaborated to build products, interact with users, and make decisions based on real-world needs completely changed the way I think about technology.
Another lesson I didn't expect was how much I would enjoy working. Before joining, I had often heard people describe work as something they simply had to get through. My experience was very different. Working on meaningful projects, learning from a supportive team, and contributing to work that had real impact made coming to the office something I genuinely looked forward to.
The internship also showed me that building a product is only part of the journey. Understanding how to communicate its value, present it to clients, and explain why it matters is just as important. Getting the opportunity to participate in client demonstrations helped me appreciate the importance of combining technical knowledge with effective communication.
If I had to describe my internship at PSI in one sentence, I would say it helped me discover how much I was capable of learning beyond the classroom.
For anyone considering joining PSI, my advice would be simple: come with an open mind. Don't limit yourself to the role mentioned in your internship title. Volunteer for new challenges, ask questions, and take ownership whenever you can. The more you step outside your comfort zone, the more you'll discover your own interests and abilities.
Looking back, this internship has given me much more than a technical experience. It has taught me to be curious, take initiative, and approach problems from a broader perspective. Most importantly, it has shown me that some of the best learning happen when you're willing to explore beyond what you already know.
